The Glow Wire Tester is a specialized instrument designed to evaluate the fire hazard risk of electrical and electronic products, household appliances, and their materials under high-temperature conditions. By simulating overheating scenarios caused by electrical faults—such as overloads or poor contact—the device applies precise thermal stress to materials or finished products to test their ignition resistance and ability to prevent flame propagation. Detailed Operating Procedures

1. Pre-use Preparation

Environmental Requirements:

The laboratory should maintain room temperature, be dry, and free from strong airflow to avoid interfering with flame behavior or affecting temperature stability.

Place the device on a stable, level surface, with a power supply of AC 220V, 50Hz, and ensure proper grounding.

Equipment Checks:

Glow Wire Condition: Typically made of nickel-chromium alloy (Ni/Cr 80/20 or 77/20) with a standard diameter of 4 mm; actual use requires a diameter greater than 3.9 mm. Replace if contaminated, oxidized, or below standard diameter.

Thermocouple Check: Ensure K-type thermocouples (0.5–1.0 mm) are correctly connected; the armored sheath must withstand temperatures ≥1050℃.

Place a standard test substrate 200 ± 5 mm below the sample, usually composed of a pine board with a layer of standard tissue paper (12–30 g/m²), to evaluate ignition potential.

Ensure sample clamps are secure; the sample surface must be perpendicular to the glow wire, with an initial gap of approximately 1 mm.

Calibration (Recommended for first use and periodic verification):

Silver Foil Calibration Method: Place a 2 mm × 2 mm silver foil (purity 99.8%, thickness 0.06 mm) at the top of the glow wire and heat until the foil melts. The theoretical temperature should be 960 ± 15℃. Compare the measured value to verify the accuracy of the temperature control system.

2. Operating Procedures

Preheating:

Turn on the power and heating system, and set the target temperature according to the testing standard (e.g., 550℃, 650℃, 750℃, 850℃, or 960℃).

Wait for the temperature to stabilize, typically 5–10 minutes, with fluctuations not exceeding ±2℃.

Sample Installation:

Securely clamp the pretreated and dried sample in the holder, ensuring perpendicular alignment with the glow wire.

Apply a constant pressure of 1.0 N ± 0.2 N (or 0.95 N ± 0.1 N per some standards) using the mechanical system.

Test Execution:

Close the test chamber and start the program via the control interface. The device automatically moves the glow wire toward the sample at a speed of 10–25 mm/s.

Start timing; the standard glow duration is 30 ± 1 seconds, adjustable from 10–60 seconds as needed.

Data Recording and Observation:

Key parameters are recorded automatically or manually, including ignition time (Ti), flame extinguishing time (Te), and whether the substrate ignited.

High-end models (e.g., KS-51B) may include automatic judgment features, outputting “Pass” or “Fail” based on pre-set logic.

Completion and Cleanup:

After testing, the glow wire retracts automatically. Activate the exhaust system to remove smoke, and clean residuals after cooling.

Export and backup test data, and generate reports in standard formats as needed.

3. Safety Precautions

Personal Protection: Operators must wear heat-resistant gloves and safety goggles to prevent burns or flame splashes.

Equipment Safety: Do not open the test chamber or move the device while hot. Keep power connections dry and avoid operation in high humidity.

Emergency Measures: Keep fire-fighting equipment on site. Press the emergency stop button immediately if abnormal conditions occur, cutting off heating and activating safety protocols.
