ISO 6941:2003 specifies a test method for measuring the flame spread properties of vertically oriented specimens of textile fabrics. The test assesses the resistance of a fabric to flame spread and provides information on its burning behavior.
Scope of application of ISO 6941:2003
ISO 6941:2003 relates to the measurement of flame spread characteristics of vertically oriented textile fabric specimens and is applicable to a wide range of textile products. These products may include, but are not limited to.
● Clothing fabrics: Textile fabrics used in the manufacture of garments such as shirts, pants, dresses, skirts, jackets, etc. fall within the scope of ISO 6941:2003.
●Home textiles: A wide range of textile products used in the home, including curtains, draperies, upholstery fabrics, bed linen, tablecloths and other textile furnishings, are acceptable for flame spread measurements as outlined in ISO 6941:2003.
● Technical textiles: Textile fabrics used in industrial applications, such as protective clothing, workwear, safety equipment and other technical textiles, may be subject to flame spread property assessment as outlined in ISO 6941:2003.
●Automotive textiles: Textile fabrics used in the automotive industry, such as upholstery fabrics for automotive seats, headliners and interiors, may be subject to the flame spread measurement requirements specified in ISO 6941:2003.
● Technical textiles: Various technical textiles, including those used in aerospace, marine, health care and other specialized applications, may be required to comply with the flame spread characteristics specified in ISO 6941:2003.
ISO 6941:2003 Test Procedure
● Sample Preparation: Prepare a representative sample of the textile fabric according to the size and condition requirements specified in the standard. The sample should be large enough to cover the test apparatus.
● Test Apparatus: Set up the test apparatus, which normally consists of a vertical stand, a specimen fixture, an ignition source (e.g. a gas burner), a stopwatch or timer, and a measuring scale. The instrument should conform to the specifications set forth in the standard.
● Test Procedure: Mount the textile sample vertically in the specimen holder, making sure it is taut and free of wrinkles or folds. Place the ignition source near the bottom edge of the sample, but not in direct contact with it. Ensure that the fabric is exposed to the flame for the specified time.
● Flame exposure:Light the burner and apply the flame to the bottom edge of the fabric sample for the specified time. Observe and record the time it takes for the flame to reach the specified location on the sample or to extinguish.
● Flame Spread Measurement: Measure the distance the flame spreads using a measuring tape. Record the maximum flame spread distance achieved during the test.
●Evaluation: Evaluate the flame spread characteristics of the textile fabric based on the observed flame spread distance, flame duration, and other relevant factors specified in the standard. The results are compared with the acceptance criteria specified in the standard to determine compliance.
● Repeat Testing: Perform multiple tests using different fabric samples to obtain representative and consistent results. Follow the prescribed procedure for each test.
