The Flame Retardant Paper and Board Burning Tester is a critical instrument for evaluating the fire safety of paper and cardboard materials treated with flame retardants. In a vertical burning test, a paper sample is held vertically, and its bottom edge is ignited. The tester then measures parameters like the flame propagation speed, the duration of afterflame and afterglow, and the char length. Conversely, a horizontal burning test involves positioning the paper sample horizontally and applying a flame to one of its edges, followed by measurements of the flame spread rate and burning time. Specialized tests, like the Horizontal Flame Test (UL 44, 83), apply a flame to a horizontal sample within an enclosure for a specific duration, often with additional indicators like a paper flag to assess the extent of burning.

The standards for flame retardant testing of paper and board vary depending on the application and the region. However, some common standards include those set by organizations like UL (Underwriters Laboratories) and ASTM International. These standards specify the criteria for passing the tests, such as maximum afterflame time, maximum char length, and whether any flaming drips are produced. Compliance with these standards assures consumers and regulatory bodies that the materials have been adequately treated to inhibit or slow down combustion.

The importance of flame retardant paper and board testing cannot be overstated. Untreated paper and cardboard are highly flammable and can contribute significantly to the rapid spread of fire. By using flame retardant treated materials that have undergone rigorous testing, the risk of fire incidents can be substantially reduced.
