In the fields of materials science and fire safety, the evaluation of combustion performance is a key factor in ensuring public safety. Unlike conventional small-flame tests, such as vertical and horizontal flammability tests, the Large Flame Flammability Tester is designed for more demanding testing requirements that more closely simulate real fire scenarios. This type of instrument is primarily used to determine the burning behavior of outdoor products, banners, tent fabrics, and large textile products when exposed to intense flame sources. It is an essential testing device for compliance with high-level international standards such as NFPA 701 and UL 214.This article provides a professional overview of the Large Flame Flammability Tester from four perspectives: equipment principles, core functions, applicable standards, and application scenarios.

The Large Flame Flammability Tester is a specialized combustion testing device designed to simulate exposure to high-intensity flame sources. Unlike conventional small-flame tests using Bunsen burners, large-flame testing aims to evaluate how materials respond to higher heat fluxes and more intense flame exposure.
The core design principle of this equipment is to reproduce extreme conditions involving exposure to large areas of open flame. During testing, the instrument applies a continuous and stable, large-scale flame to the specimen using a burner positioned at a specified angle. The test observes whether the material ignites, the rate of flame spread, and its ability to self-extinguish after the flame source is removed.
This testing method is particularly important for evaluating textiles used outdoors or in public spaces, where the consequences of a fire can be severe.
The basic operating procedure involves installing the specimen frame and wind shields, connecting the gas supply and power supply, setting the combustion time, using the positioning function to align the burner with the specimen, and then starting automatic ignition and timing. After the test, save the data and clean the equipment. The detailed procedure is described below without specifying numerical values.
Installation and Connections
1. Install the Frames
Place the large specimen frame on the equipment platform, align it with the six mounting holes, and secure it using the supplied screws. Place the small specimen frame in the center and secure it with the quick-release clamps. The distance can be adjusted using the clamp screws.
2. Install the Wind Shields
Insert the two wind shields into the positioning holes on both sides of the platform and secure them with screws.
3. Install the Restraining Combs
Secure the front comb at both sides using screws. Install the rear comb using the stacked screws and adjust its position. Adjust the distance between the combs according to the size and thickness of the specimen.
4. Connect the Gas and Power Supplies
The gas inlet and power connection are located on the back of the equipment. Connect the gas hose and the 220 V power cable, and secure the gas hose with a hose clamp.
Parameter Settings
1. Access the Settings Menu
In the Parameter Settings interface, configure the following options:
First row: Clear historical data.
Second row: Set Automatically Shut Off Gas When the Test Ends to YES.
Third row: Set Automatic Ignition at Test Start to YES.
2. Set the Test Time
On the test interface, click the TA numerical value to modify the test combustion time. T1 indicates the afterflame time, while T2 indicates the burning time of flaming droplets.
3. Adjust the Gas Supply
Turn the selector valve so that its pointer faces the corresponding flowmeter for Flame C or Flame E. Adjust the small flowmeter to 160 mL/min, and use the pressure regulator below it to adjust the pressure gauge reading.
Ignition and Testing
1. Position the Burner
Click Position Adjustment to move the burner automatically to the specimen position. Use the pull ring to adjust the burner forward or backward, then tighten the screw to lock it in place. Click Stop to retract the burner.
2. Ignite the Flame
Click Gas to turn on the gas supply, then click Ignition to ignite the flame. If automatic ignition has been enabled, simply click Start.
3. Start the Test
Click Start. The burner moves forward and begins exposing the specimen to the flame. When the TA timer reaches the preset time, the burner automatically retracts and the gas supply is shut off.
4. Record the Times
After the afterflame period ends, click Timing to record the afterflame time. Click it again to record the afterglow time. Before T2 ends, click Timing 2 to record the burning time of flaming droplets.
5. Save the Data
Click Save to store the test data. The saved records can be viewed in the historical data interface.
Safety Precautions
Before operation, check the gas lines for leaks and ensure that the equipment is reliably grounded.
Keep the protective door closed during testing to prevent injuries caused by open flames and hot surfaces.
After testing, shut off the gas supply first, then switch off the power. Turn on the exhaust ventilation to remove the exhaust gases completely.
The core industrial value of the Large Flame Flammability Tester lies in its ability to provide large-flame testing for outdoor products, banners, and similar materials in accordance with standards such as NFPA 701 and UL 214. It is an essential tool for evaluating their fire safety performance.By simulating exposure to large flames under actual fire conditions, the equipment quantifies material combustion performance and directly supports product safety certification, quality control, and regulatory compliance.
Specific Benefits
Safety Certification and Compliance
This instrument is a fundamental piece of equipment for determining whether products comply with relevant fire safety standards and regulations. For outdoor products and decorative materials entering markets such as North America, test reports are required as evidence of regulatory compliance.
Product Development and Quality Control
During material development, the tester helps manufacturers quantify the effects of different formulations and treatment processes on flame-retardant performance, enabling product design optimization. During production, it can be used for batch sampling inspections to ensure consistent compliance with applicable requirements.
Risk Management and Market Access
For purchasers and regulatory authorities, the test data provides an objective basis for evaluating material fire risks and determining suitable applications, such as use in public spaces or on building exteriors. This helps reduce potential fire hazards.
As global attention to fire safety continues to grow, the Large Flame Flammability Tester has evolved from a tool used solely for compliance testing into an important partner in material safety research and development. It helps companies and testing institutions accurately evaluate product fire risks while providing essential technical support for protecting lives and property. When selecting this type of equipment, users should pay particular attention to whether it complies with the latest international standards, such as NFPA 701. as well as its level of automation and the accuracy of its data recording, to ensure the authority and credibility of the test results.
